1967年東京都出身。

1984年に渡伊。国立フィレンツェ・アカデミア美術学院で、油絵と美術史を専攻。

1997年より漫画家として活動 『テルマエ・ロマエ』で第3回マンガ大賞、第14回手塚治虫文化賞短編賞受賞。

 

著書に『国境のない生き方』（小学館）、『男性論』『ヴィオラ母さん』（文春新書）『パスタ嫌い』（新潮社）『スティーブ・ジョブズ』（講談社）『プリニウス』（とり・みきと共作　新潮社）『オリンピアキュクロス』（集英社）など多数。

エジプト、シリア、ポルトガル、米国を経て現在はイタリアと日本に拠点を置く。

 

平成27年度芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞受賞。

平成29年イタリア共和国星勲章コメンダトーレ綬章。

Born in Tokyo on April 20, 1967, she moved to Italy at 17, in 1984, to attend the National Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where she studied art history and oil painting.
She began working as manga artist in 1997.  She lived in Syria, Portugal and the United States, returning to Italy  in 2013.

In 2010 she won the third edition of the Manga Award for Thermae Romae. In 2015 she won the Tezuka Osamu award (section "story", also for Thermae Romae) as well as the "New Face" award of the Japanese Ministry of Education. In 2017 she was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of the Star (Italy).

She is currently working on the two series "Pliny" and "Gli Artigiani; The Craftsmen of Renasissance" together with manga artist Tori Miki.

Nata a Tokyo il 20 aprile 1967 si è trasferita in Italia a 17 anni, nel 1984, per frequentare l'Accademia Nazionale di Belle Arti di Firenze, dove ha studiato storia dell'arte e pittura ad olio. 

Nel 1997 avvia la sua carriera di fumettista. Ha vissuto in Siria, Portogallo e Stati Uniti, rientrando in Italia nel 2013.

 

Nel 2010 ha vinto la terza edizione del Manga Award con Thermae Romae; nel 2015 ha vinto il premio Tezuka Osamu (sezione "racconto", sempre con Thermae Romae); nel 2015 ha vinto anche il premio "New Face" del Ministero dell'Educazione; e nel 2017 è stata insignita del grado di Commendatore dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia.

 

Attualmente lavora alle due serie "Plinius" e "Gli artigiani; Storia dei pittori rinascimentarli italiani" assieme al fumettista Tori Miki.
